BuildIdeas! The Smart City

Many people have asked, why those of involved in designing and building American cities cannot achieve the results that are being witnessed in cities across Asia and the Middle East? Why are we unable to rebuild infrastructure that was designed to last 75 years, but that is now 150 years old?  Why has it been so difficult to develop sustainable financing models and create resilient solutions that address a changing climate and endemic violence in urban centers?

While certain aspects of these questions cannot be answered by design alone, architects, engineers, planners, and policy makers have reflected on these concerns and offered new and innovative solutions.

At this BuildIdeas Breakfast, we will explore some of these developments via the guidance of Peter Ellis, former Principal of SOM, leader of their Asia practice, Cannon Design Leader, and now Founder of Peter Ellis New New Cities.  Peter will ask panelists to consider the best practices for the design and construction of cities, the role that data and sensors and playing in their design and management, and the guidance that organizations like the Rockefeller Foundation’s 100 Resilient Cities Program have provided.

Buildings 2.0 Conference: Design, Systems, Energy, and Standards

  • UI Labs

The idea of intelligent buildings is seductive. Sensor enabled smart buildings that know when they need cleaning, heating or cooling. Buildings that harness rainwater, use less and recycle more. Resiliency buildings that withstand disaster. Sustainable buildings made from only environmentally friendly materials. Digital-friendly buildings that support the way people want to live in 2017.

Join us as we spend a half day at UI LABS exploring the possibilities, what we truly want from our future buildings, and what more needs to be done to bring our goals closer to reality.

BuildIdeas! Robots to the Rescue

Robotics have revolutionized manufacturing over the last 50 years, but are only just beginning to disrupt the way in which we design and maintain the built environment.  Companies such as ABB are partnering with construction companies such as Skanska, drones and other unmanned devices are entering the marketplace, and data is being collected along the way that is beginning to create an opening to greater efficiency, safety, and profitability.  At the same time, machine learning and artificial intelligence are helping these robots understand a multiplicity of variables in order to perform better and deliver greater value.  In order to get a better sense of the current state of the art, we have invited experts developing robotic technology, exploring automated additive manufacturing, and creating artificial intelligence software to optimize performance to share their work and participate in a moderated panel discussion.

BuiltWorlds Video Awards Night

  • TechNexus

This past year, BuiltWorlds Media took another step to try to move the industry forward.

Reaching our community almost exclusively through original written content and robust events (like our Summit), we realized that many members of our community couldn’t attend every event we held or get everything they wanted from the articles that we published. Today, the world of communications is mobile, social, digital, and video.

So pushing ourselves to serve our community the way they want to be reached, we launched BuiltWorlds Original Shows -- more than a dozen video series, each focused on a particular area of exploration to meet the interests of the BuiltWorlds Community.

Shows like:
All Hands on Tech (a hands-on exploration of emerging new technologies, grouped by topic.)
Project Innovation (a look at the projects that advance both how and what we design, develop, and build.)
Tech in Real Estate (how technology is transforming the landscape of planning, financing, and developing commercial real estate)

..were created with one central goal in mind: furthering our mission of starting more conversations, spreading valuable ideas, and helping fuel understanding and innovation in our built world.

Come join the local BuiltWorlds community on Thursday, November 10th, 2016 for a night of red-carpet theatrics as we celebrate and thank the Original Show Participants from the past year in a networking-style event with cocktails, tray-passed Hors D'oeuvres and a lot of popcorn.

BuiltWorlds Hackathon 2017

  • MHUB

Dozens of new studies are shining the light on the “slowness” with which the built industry has adopted technology.

But in 2017, with more affordable costs and less risk, there’s no longer an excuse not to take a stake in tech investment.

This November, we’re helping industry companies get a “taste” of what technology can do for their business.

Introducing the BuiltWorlds Hackathon.

It’s a week-end long competition where all-star developers, makers, and designers gather to hack creative solutions to burning AEC industry problems, using the world’s most cutting-edge technologies.

Future Workforce Conference

  • UI Labs

The demand for skilled men and women in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industries continues to rise, while the number of people available to fill these positions continues to decline.

AEC companies are taking concrete steps to cultivate and retain an empowered workforce via great benefits packages, innovative spaces in which to work, and continuing education programs.

At the same time, educational institutions are continuing to refine their curricula around developments in the field and are partnering with major industry players to create a two-way path of communication that will better prepare students for their career and create a conduit of innovation for corporate partners.

Although these efforts are changing the culture of the AEC industries and creating a new generation of men and women excited by AEC careers, entrenched workforce habits remain.

Diversity of women and minorities is still a concern, workforce health and wellness continues to be a challenge, work life balance is a perennial topic of debate, and workplace safety is vital.

Over the course of this full day conference, we will explore these topics in order to better understand how companies and employees are cultivating the next generation of AEC leaders in order to sustain the health and growth of their companies.

Check back soon for a list of confirmed speakers!
