Closing the Kennedy 
Upgrading bridges over one of the area’s busiest expressways, one 
weekend at a time.

This presentation will focus on the design and construction associated with the I-90/94 at 
Ohio Feeder Bridge Replacement and Ramp Reconstruction project. This project replaces 
the outdated feeder ramp bridge and replaces it with two new structures that offer 
improved sight distance and vertical clearance. The project is currently on schedule for 
substantial completion this fall. This presentation will highlight some of the unique 
challenges in the demolition of the existing cast-in-place structure which necessitated full 
weekend closures of the Kennedy Expressway. 

Mr. Albert is the Liaison/ Resident Engineer for the I-90/94 at Ohio Feeder Bridge 
Replacement and Ramp Reconstruction project. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil 
Engineering degree from Bradley University and is a licensed Professional Engineer in 
five states. Mr. Albert has over 22 years of experience in program management, 
construction management for civil and structural engineering projects for various 
municipal, county, State, and toll highway improvements. 
Jim Hamelka was the Lead Structural Engineer for the I-90/94 at Ohio Feeder Bridge 
Replacement and Ramp Reconstruction project during the design phase. He holds a 
Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at 
Chicago and is a licensed Structural Engineer in Illinois and a licensed Professional 
Engineer in four states. Mr. Hamelka has over 16 years of experience in structural 
engineering inspection, design, and project management.
